This jelly is based on Murtagh Fitzgibbons Fraser, one of the more colorfully characters found in the series of OUTLANDER novels by Diana Gabaldon.

Given Murtagh's personal history, around 1715,  he  attended the Gathering at Castle Leoch to try to woo the hand of Ellen MacKenzie. During the tynchal, he killed a wounded boar single-handed with a dagger and Colum MacKenzie gave him the tusks, which were nearly a perfect double circle. He had them turned into a set of bracelets that he gave to Ellen, though she had chosen to marry Brian Fraser. Ellen and Brian went on to have four children (Jenny, William, Jamie and Robert). When Jamie was a week old, Murtagh knelt at Ellen's feet and swore an oath to her that he would follow Jamie always, to do his bidding, and guard his back when he became a man and needed service, hence becoming Jamie Fraser's godfather.

So it is only fitting that  a Scotch based cocktail made with armatto called the "The Godfather" should be included in our collection. The cocktail itself, is cousin to the Rusty Nail and became popular in the 1970s, though no one's really sure of its origins. Some stories say it was inspired by the famous gangster film of the same name; others say that the Don himself, Marlon Brando, drank it regularly. To be perfectly honest, we don't know if we'll ever know the truth of the tale.

Whatever the origin of the cocktail, we are certainly assured that this jelly will be perfect over scones and maybe a spoonful in your morning coffee.
